7 Ways to Train Your Brain for Positive Thinking

December 20, 20224 min read

Believe it or not, you have the power to train your brain for positive thinking.

Just like a computer, your mind is wired to think in certain ways based on the programs (or thoughts) that you feed it.

The good news is that you can deliberately choose what thoughts to feed your mind, and over time, those thoughts will become automatic, habitual ways of thinking.

As a result, you can learn to think more positively simply by making a few intentional changes in your thought patterns. It may sound difficult, but it's actually quite easy once you get the hang of it.

Here are a few ways to help you get started:

1. Pay Attention To Your Self-Talk

The things you say to yourself have a big impact on the way you think and feel. Make an effort to catch yourself whenever you're thinking or saying something negative, and challenge those thoughts with positive ones. For example, instead of telling yourself that you're not good enough, remind yourself that you're doing your best and that's all that matters.

2. Be Aware Of Your Thoughts

The first step to changing your thinking is to become aware of your thoughts. This may seem like a no-brainer, but it's actually harder than it sounds. Negative thoughts are sneaky little things, and they can creep up on you when you least expect it.

Pay attention to the conversations you have with yourself throughout the day. Are they mostly negative or positive? Do you focus on what's going wrong or what's going right? When you catch yourself thinking negatively, try to reframe the thought in a more positive light.

For example, instead of "I'm such a failure," try "I'm learning and growing." The next time you find yourself thinking something negative, stop and ask yourself why you're thinking it. Is it really true? Or is it just a negative thought that's been programmed into your mind?

3. Replace Your Negative Thoughts With Positive Ones

Once you've identified a negative thought, it's time to replace it with a positive one. This step may take some practice, but eventually, it will become second nature. Every time you have a negative thought, counter it with a positive one.

For example, if you're thinking "I'm never going to make it," replace it with "I'm doing everything I can to make my dream come true." It’s only natural to feel disappointed when you make a mistake, but try to see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Every mistake is one step closer to success.

4. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the quickest and easiest ways to shift your mindset from negative to positive. Throughout the day, take a few moments to think about things you're grateful for—big or small. It could be anything from simple things like a sunny day or a hot cup of coffee, to bigger things like having loving family and friends or being able to do what you love for a living. Whatever it is, taking time to appreciate the good things in your life will help you feel more positive overall.

5. Surround Yourself With Positive People

The people you spend the most time with have a big influence on the way you think and feel. So make sure that they're supportive and uplifting people who will help rather than hinder your journey to becoming more positive.

6. Give Yourself Some Credit

One of the reasons why it's so easy to get stuck in negative thinking patterns is because we're quick to criticize ourselves and slow to give ourselves credit. Next time you accomplish something—no matter how small—take a moment to celebrate and give yourself a pat on the back. It might feel silly at first, but over time it will help train your brain to focus on the positives rather than dwell on the negatives.7. Practice Visualization Exercises

7. Practice Visualization Exercises

Visualization exercises are a great way to program your mind for positive thinking. Close your eyes and imagine yourself achieving your goals. See yourself succeeding in your business ventures. Visualize what your life will be like when you reach your dreams. The more vividly you can imagine these things, the more likely they are to become your reality.

By making these small changes in your thinking patterns, you can start to see big changes in the way you feel and live your life.

When you make an effort to think positively, you'll find that it's easier and easier to see the good in every situation—no matter what life throws your way.
